Virtual action for peace with Iran

On Monday I mentioned the Lag4Peace protest going on in Second Life
tomorrow. The theme of the event is "Don't Iraq Iran." I have been putting some info Second Life about our Iran Program (see photo below) and I also have more details about tomrrow's protest.

There are a number of events going on tomorrow, for those who only want to spend an hour or two in Second Life, I recommend attending the keynote address from Sequoia Pinion of Spiritual Peacemakers at 11:45am EST on Commonwealth Island, immediately followed by kick-off rally at noon, and then a protest at SL Capitol Hill at 1pm.

A detailed schedule of events follows after the jump.

Lag4Peace

I'll post more information about this later this week, but I want to let you readers know about something really exciting going on this week. On Saturday there will be a day-long series of protests called Lag4Peace in the online virtual world of Second Life with the goal of raising awareness about preventing an attack on Iran.

Here's is a picture of my avatar looking at a poster about the event.

Spreading the word about Burma

[avatars in red t-shirts] Over the past week there have been countless demonstrations around the world is support of freedom and democracy in Burma. Even in the virtual world of Second Life there has been a red t-shirt campaign and a "human chain" action to bring people together, spread the word, and show support for the people of Burma. On Flickr you can see many more pictures of this innovative action as well as photos from demonstrations around the world calling for peace and justice in Burma.

[Israeli protest]Our colleagues at the Buddhist Peace Fellowship have been hard at work and have a lot of information to share including this list of Burma events around the U.S. and the world, a collection of statements from Buddhist communities in support of their brethren in Burma, and most importantly an updated list of what we can do to support the people marching for democracy in Burma.

Virtual organizing for real change

(Cross-posted at InterfaithFast.org.)

me with sign I am thrilled to announce that one of the many events that will commemorate the Interfaith Fast to End the War in Iraq on Monday October 8th will be in Second Life! Second Life is an online virtual world created by its members or "residents." Two national nonprofit organizations, the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Peacemaker Institute, will sponsor the event on Commonwealth Island, which is a home for progressive organizations in Second Life. Our celebration will include a meditation for world peace, speakers, and even virtual food!

Several different groups have also been organizing in Facebook, an online social networking community, to spread the word about the fast. One group of Young Universalist Unitarian Peacemakers has already got over 300 people signed up!

Still working for peaceful tomorrows

Today is the sixth anniversary of 9/11 and there are so many things I want to say. I'll start with a shout out to September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. This is a group that responded to tragedy with compassion instead of vengeance. Here is an excerpt of their statement on this anniversary:
